SIBO - What is it?
SMALL INTESTINE BACTERIAL OVERGROWTH – abnormal overgrowth of bacteria in the upper intestine.
COMMON SYMPTOMS:
Abdominal distention, pain, bloating, gas, flatulence
Changes in transit time
Diarrhea
Constipation
Symptoms tend to be worse as the day progresses
SOME CAUSES/RISK FACTORS:
A history of food poisoning
Exposure to GI infection while traveling
Reduced hydrochloric acid production and proton pump inhibitors
Chronic stress
Neurologic changes that affect SI motility
Decreased motility of the small intestine due to structural issues like adhesions
HOW TO DIAGNOSE + TYPES OF SIBO
3 hour lactulose breath test will help determine the type of bacteria you have
TYPES:
o methane gas producing bacteria
o hydrogen gas producing bacteria
o hydrogen sulfide gas producing bacteria

Factors to consider:
Severity of overgrowth – how many treatment rounds will be needed
Depends on the type of bacterial overgrowth
