Today we’re looking at hunters & trappers in the American West. For this week’s topic I combed through the Library of Congress’ newspaper archives from the 1800s, as well as the 1898 journal, ‘The Fur Trade Review’, vol. 26. Other primary sources include ‘Canadian Wilds’ by Martin Hunter, ‘My Sixty Years on the Plains: Trapping, Trading, and Indian Fighting,’ by W.T. Hamilton, ‘The Adventures of Captain Bonneville,’ by Washington Irving, and two books by Theodore Roosevelt: ‘The Wilderness Hunter,’ and ‘Hunting Trips of a Ranchman.’ As for secondary sources, I used Eric Jay Dolin’s superb book, ‘Fur, Fortune, and Empire.’
Special thanks to Jay Ungar for granting me permission to use his song, ‘Liberty’s Golden Shore.’ For those that might not be aware, Jay is also the musician behind the famed, ‘Ashokan Farewell,’ the main theme of Ken Burns’ landmark PBS documentary, ‘The Civil War’ (which resulted in an Emmy nomination for Jay and a Grammy for the soundtrack album). Jay was kind enough to respond to my permission request personally, and grant me permission to use ‘Liberty’s Golden Shore’ in this video. So thanks again, Jay!

About Man vs History: Man vs History is a YouTube channel that endeavors to combine both education and entertainment, specifically related to history. While the focus of the channel will expand beyond analyzing the historical accuracy of RDO, for the time being, there’s still more quality videos to come on the topic. For the past decade I’ve been history professor at the college level. The knowledge and skills I acquired through my educational journey and profession are put to work in the creation of these videos, allowing me to locate rare primary source materials, analyze them carefully, and coherently deliver the content in an entertaining and educational manner.
For each one I conduct an immense amount of research, scouring American and British archives, books, and scholarly journal articles. Gratefully, my profession also grants me access to a network of historical experts & specialists including authors, university professors, and museum curators. I hope you enjoy the end result!
