In this video we extend the earliest, and perhaps most famous, computation in the history of calculus: the derivation of Archimedes of the area of a parabolic sector, to the case of a cubic function. The framework is geometrically the projective view of points and lines in the plane, and analytically the Algebraic Calculus which does not rely on any infinite processes and works entirely over the rational numbers.
We will see that Archimedes’ parabolic area formula actually extends remarkably to the cubic case, but we have to reframe it to involve the unique point at infinity. But for quartics and quintics and beyond, we have no analog.
This is one of a series of videos on a modern approach to curves and surfaces combining historical insights with the power of modern linear algebra and an algebraic approach to analytical issues.
