Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced his country will receive its first fleet of nuclear-powered submarines under a new trilaterial defence partnership with the UK and US, called AUKUS.
The pact was established to help establish security and maintain peace in the Indo-Pacific region, and counter China’s growing influence in the region.
Australia’s submarines will likely be built in Adelaide, South Australia and only be nuclear-powered, with the deal not extending to nuclear weapons.
Morrison was joined by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and US President Joe Biden in making the announcement.
